okay so i read some spoilers about the novel and
she ends up with baron in the end and im pretty sure that what he said in this ch was either phrased weirdly orr just false since he does love her,, the spoilers didn't really mention this scene they just talk about like who the baron is and they like search for clues about the painting together and he ends up wanting to stay near them to protect them. He doesn't con her though thats for sure. the baron tells mildred about the painting and how it can be dangerous for them to live by themselves. he's just worried about their safety. (these are all spoilers from the novel)
