well if that kind of thing is his job, then hes bound by rules to not change the future. he saw what was supposed to happen, and made it happen, however painful it was
ah thank you for answering. this story kinda hurt my brain cells a bit.
wait a second, this might just be me thinking too far ahead but the future girl wrote "I wanted to eat ice cream with you again" which means she did meet the guy, but did she meet him in the same circumstances like with the little girl now?
or he's genuinely trying to make a change?
because after all, that's her future self and he's in her future and present.
which meant that they were probably leading the same path unless a change happens.
oh never mind, he said he'll meet her in the future to eat ice cream again... BUT WOULDNT THAT MAKE THE FUTURE THE SAME? BECAUSE AFTER ALL, SHES THE ONE WHO BROKE THE PROMISE,NOT HIM.
