Who you like isn't a choice, but confessing to that person is. Unfortunately, that choice was stolen from Arima by his sister and Kitaoji. Who you date and have sex with is also a choice, and Arima is trying to make a choice to protect his heart, and there's no shame in trying to protect yourself from a situation that, if this weren't a manga, most likely would not end well.
