I think the Author wants to Make it Believable Exactly because its in a Different Era. You really dont see anything beyond the Panels. I doubt you can really Take This If you cant See how the Characters truely are and Would react- you're Mad because of a Character. That makes no sense to me. In like 10 Chapters things might change and it will be a whole different conversation. If you cant Take the Story dont read it , this is my advice to you.
