    Summary:

This summary is pretty long (longer than this chapter anyway, LOL) and full of SPOILERS for chapters 1-92.

    SPOILERS AHEAD

Many details are only hinted at or implied in the story, keep that in mind! Some things may change as we learn more about the past in the current flashback arc.

    So here we go:

A long time ago in the Kingdom of the East China Sea, the Eastern Dragon King had two sons. The eldest, Ao Gu, was the crown prince and heir, and the youngest was Ao Yue, a green dragon, who we know now as Ao Ao. Ao Yue had an unusually strong body, and When he was still a baby, the Dragon King and some of the other deities sealed the Demon King inside of him. This turned him into the dreaded black dragon. It is likely they intended to destroy the demon king once it was sealed, but Ao Yue was rescued and taken away before that happened. The Dragon King forbade the kingdom from ever again speaking the name of Ao Yue, the second prince, and the Eastern Kingdom went on as though Ao Yue had never existed.

Ao Yue was given a new identity as Xuan Yue, and he lived in the human realm. We don't yet know much about his life during this time. He didn't remember his life in the Dragon Palace or his family. Ao Gu checked in on him from time to time and watched over him, but could not reveal his identity as Xuan Yue's brother. At some point, numerous cultivators and demon slayers come to the mountain where Ao Yue/Xuan Yue lived in hiding, in order to kill the black dragon. Xuan Yue, disguised in his human form, met a demon slayer called Xiao Jifeng. They fall in love. At some point, Xuan Yue gave his dragon pearl to Xiao Jifeng and then disappeared. Xiao Jifeng looked for Xuan Yue for a long time, and when he finally found him, he locked him up and kept him captive, tormenting him. It appeared that Xiao Jifeng went mad from the power of the pearl, or the demon king, or both. Broken-hearted and in despair, Xuan Yue used his own soul and Jifeng's blood to cast a curse: Jifeng would never know love again, and would suffer the pain of loneliness and heartbreak forever, over and over. Then Xuan Yue apparently died.

We have not yet been shown clearly what happened after that, but somehow, the parts of Xuan Yue's shattered soul were pieced back together and restored with a soul needle. We do know that Ao Gu helped Xuan Yue with the soul needle, and wiped all of Xuan Yue's memories that were related to Jifeng. Dr. Sun, who had a clinic in the human realm where Xuan Yue lived, was also involved with the restoration and healing. Xuan Yue's heart strings were cut so that he would never fall in love again, and thus never suffer the anguish of a broken heart in any of his future lives. He was reborn somehow as AoAo, returned to infancy, and grew up again with no dragon pearl, no spiritual powers, no heart to fall in love, and no memory of his earlier life as Ao Yue/Xuan Yue.

Jifeng's soul somehow ended up in the body of Ryan, a European black dragon who guards a mountain in (I think) France. We don't yet know how this occurred.

Ao Ao is extremely limited as a dragon because he has no dragon pearl, and he is considered an embarrassment to his entire clan--except big brother Ao Gu, who has a severe case of brother complex. Ao Ao's father won't even look at him or touch him. His only friend is Li'l Fish, a carp who has a massive tsundere crush on Ao Ao and who also wants to become a strong dragon.

Ao Ao gets sick and tired of being an outcast and runs away from home to travel around the world (Ao Ao means "the rambling wanderer"), learning techniques and hopefully growing stronger, so he can be accepted. While he was searching on Rooibos Mountain for a notoriously strong Western dragon from whom he wished to receive training, he met a baby black dragon on. The baby dragon was actually the fearsome dragon Ao Ao was looking for, but he refused to believe it. He nicknamed the baby dragon "little black ball", and they spent many years playing together. Ao Ao still wanted to get stronger, so he left the mountain, promising to return. His memories were wiped again, however, and he forgot all about the "little black ball". Black Ball/Ryan waited for a thousand years, in the care of an aristocratic human family who had a contract with him, but Ao Ao never returned to the mountain.

Meanwhile, crown prince/big brother Ao Gu was busy making lots of enemies, such as Yu Xi, the flower spirit. Ao Gu interrupted Yu Xi's ascension to godhood, presumably by accident, though Yu Xi thinks it was with malicious intent. Ao Gu is also disliked by Jifeng's former junior sect brother, a cultivator who became an immortal and is still alive in the present day. Yu Xi attempted revenge against Ao Gu numerous times. At one point, Ao Gu was tricked and drugged by a Northern dragon who had his horn knocked off by the crown prince. He wants revenge and he planned to use the opportunity to steal Ao Gu's dragon pearl so Ao Gu couldn't rival him in pursuit of the Dragon God throne. Ao Gu blacked out and assaulted and violated Yu Xi, who was coincidentally at the palace that night for another assassination attempt. Ao Gu has no memory of any of these incidents, but the characters he has wronged are all out to get him now.

Yu Xi bands together with Junior Sect Brother/Longtan School Headmaster to hunt Ao Gu. Junior is trying to revive his former senior, Jifeng, who is sealed inside Ryan. Or perhaps ryan is the Demon King, with his powers and memories sealed--this hasn't been shown yet. Anyway, Jifeng makes trouble sometimes and is in conflict with Ryan. As Ao Ao and Ryan get closer, Ao Ao starts to change bit by bit and begins to recall memories of his past life, though he doesn't understand what's happening to him.

Yu Xi cannot ascend to godhood and is reduced to becoming a humble local earth deity, the tudigong. He takes the wandering Ao Ao into his home, the Tudigong temple; undercover in the human realm, they pose as grandfather and high school student. Yu Xi tells Ao Ao that there's a dragon pearl hidden somewhere on the school grounds. In reality, Ao Yue/Xuan Yue/Ao Ao's dragon pearl is still inside Jifeng/Ryan, and Yu Xi plans to lure Ao Gu into assassination range by sticking close to Ao Ao. Yu Xi is also unknowingly incubating a seed that was created when Ao Gu's yang essence overwhelmed his weakened yin flower body. This seed, or nucleus as Dr. Sun calls it, is later removed. Its whereabouts are currently unknown, so Yu Xi and Ao Gu have a little dragon seedling out there somewhere... let's hope Ao Gu doesn't accidentally step on it or something, yikes.

Ao Ao survives the test of the heavenly tribulation with the help of Ao Gu and Ryan, and receives his 'spiritual power up' accordingly. He still doesn't have his dragon pearl, however, so he's having trouble attaining his dragon form and accessing any powers. Being close to Ryan/Jifeng seems to be having some strange effect on him, though. Ao Ao decides to try and obtain the radiant blade, a sword made from the pearls of a powerful dragon ancestor; he thinks this sword may be able to help him obtain power. He and Ryan journey to the Heavenly Realm, and after a bunch of trouble and a big fight with a bunch of other dragons and gods, Ao Ao starts to remember Little Black Ball--it was Ryan all along. Jifeng flips out and causes a ruckus, and one of Heaven's employees attempts to shoot him with a golden arrow. Ao Ao jumps in to protect 'the little black ball' and takes the arrow instead, and his soul needle is broken. Ao Gu gets the radiant blade and steps into the fray. That brings us up to the current translated chapters!

TL;DR a pair of dragons engage in a tragic love story over thousands of years and two lifetimes, while Kimihiro Watanuki and Sesshomaru have an affair in the background.

Wow, so Ao Gu's baby brother in the flashbacks when both were kids was always Xuan Yue, rather than a baby Ao Ao, all along? Wow, this clears up a lot of stuff for me now, thanks!! (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

    No problem!
Yes, when you see Ao Gu as a child with baby Ao, it's Ao Yue/Xuan Yue. When Xuan Yue's soul was reassembled, he became a baby again, and that's the current Ao Ao. It still hasn't been shown if he was actually reborn in a new body, or if it's the same body all along, just shrunk back down to an infant after all his traumas and injuries. I tend to lean toward the latter, but I don't know for sure.
