    *SPOILER* one of the mcs die at the end, and it’s explained in the final chapter.

    Nobody dies in this story. The father clearly explained that if a mermaid/Merman leaves the sea to live on land they cannot return to the sea, because if they go back into the sea they have to stay there and cannot go return on land.
    It is just a matter of returning to their world in their true forms.
