I have another theory! What if her powers are too strong for her body since when she wasnt taking the pills she was in so much pain. So for her not to go through so much pain they are suppresing them!
I think the dad is suppressing her powers because he wants to “keep her safe”. The church might have helped because they want someone else to take over the powers that they can control. Like the FL later on. (Just my guess)

That's probably it lol. It has that kind of plot.
The meds are totally sus in my opinion and I would venture a guess that if she stopped taking them her true powers would appear - but this all a wild guess on my part... that look on the old man’s face makes me wonder what he is hiding!
