Your brain doesn't get enough oxygen which results in you passing out (or dying if the person doesn't let go). Then he started hitting him which made him more seriously injured.
Technically the comment above isn’t wrong but I would like to add, there’s a right way and a wrong way to choke someone, if you’re choking for sexual reasons you need to squeeze from the sides that way you’re just cutting off blood flow, if you choke from the front you’re gonna crush the windpipe. Also from reading the hospital scene it seems like the guy actually did crush his windpipe a bit, so he was just uneducated :/

When you choke someone in the wrong place, it crushes the windpipe, and it's not hard to do, our throats are incredibly fragile
