I also think the plot in FYL was about the courage to reach your first great love and having the strength to keep that relationship healthy, while in FOS it's about independence, but also the recovering from your first (and unilateral) love, moving on and starting over.
But that's just my opinion, I also want to spank Yuri so bad.
