You do realize this story is about slavery right? Noah is doing what's right. Spinel are slaves and nothing but objects the Pel. It's called preservation. Spinel, just like actual slaves, have no reason to trust their slave masters. They are the enemy. Anyone who can own another person is not to be trusted.
This story glosses over the horrors of slavery for the sake of the love story, but slavery is not the same is being a servant. All of your humanity and dignity are thrown out of the window. You are an object to be owned and your labor is not paid with wages as you considered an equal.
If anything, Noah is one of the only sensible ones in this story.
