Everyone (even fictional characters) deserves empathy and understanding. Just because you can't understand why they do something doesn't mean they don't have reasons they believe are valid. Some choices may be inexcusable, but forgiveness is a selfish thing. It's not for the other person, but for yourself. And everyone deserves to be happy. The fact is that River didn't die and was reincarnated. Not only that, but reincarnated as a God, while h allows him to remain with Heil for far longer than if he had been human. It also grants River the power and capabilities to stop Lari, the main villain in this story. Besides, Khaol always made it clear that River was expendable in order to get his dead lover back. Of course it's wrong to trade a life for a life, but love, loss, pain and desperation drive people to do crazy and stupid things. Had River stayed human and died human, Heil would have had 60 years, tops, with River and that would be it. Does it seem unfair that Khaol now feels guilty in hindsight? Well, sure. But hindsight is 20/20 and Khaol had tunnel vision. What he had been trying to accomplish for centuries was finally going to come to fruition. Thats not something easily let go of. You can forgive without forgetting and there is nothing wrong with someone trying to seek redemption for a wrong doing. However ot is up to the person they wronged to decide whether or not they'll accept the olive branch offered. Because you can forgive without repayment, which is, oftentimes more of a punishment to the guilty party when they can't physically make amends than flat out hating them forever. River will make his own choices and karma is already kicking Khaol's ass, so he'll probably suffer for a little longer and sacrifice himself for River or Heil and that'll be that.

Hahaha. Don't worry, your tone came through very well, so I laughed and am not offended in the least. I have a feeling (and I'm normally right with a few minor details changed) that Khaol will sacrifice himself to save either River or Heil, or both. More than likely Heil because it would be more impactful due to the fact that Khaol sacrificed River for his own lover, so its "only fair" he does the same, even if he hates Heil. Which he does. Ought to be interesting.
Bitches, he practically KILLED River, and STABBED him on the back, not mentioning that he gave River false hopes. I that old God would have wanted to continue living, River would cease to EXIST, bcs his soul would have never been reincarnated and Heil would be ALONE. Kahol doesn't deserve empathy. Period.
