If he had treated her nicely then people would had started thinking that Duke household is being favored. Prince didn't want the Duke household to become anymore strong then it already had been. He wanted ruin that household so he mistreated her so Duke wouldn't be able to do anything to the prince position. When FL died in last timeline he regretted alot and even cried with his child in his hand. I think some people also said that prince murdered real Veronica as she killed our FL.
