Guys calm down i got a bit offender for her as well but then i stopped to think for a second and like.

Imagine you're the emperor of the strongest empire in the world and this tiny bean sprout that took away half of the glory in one of your OWN competition expects you to do everything she says even if what she wants would demean your title and power.

You guys damn well know if you were him you'd turn spiteful as well and "put her in her place"(there are a lot of salty beaches here)

No, if my son lost, I would be sad that he didn't get it, but that also means that my son needs to work harder for himself. If someone else won and wanted a simple wish to meet my other son, I would be like, ok

I think you misunderstand, the emperor grants a wish for the winner, which is the rules he made in the competition, which is the reason she even wants to win it

What I think is that they said the winner could be granted their wish and when fl told her wish he said no like wtf that's not what they said before.

I'm aware i sound incredibly flippant but do you guys know about diplomacy and statemanship?

First of all, there are lines you just don't cross when you're a little noble from a well enough family, and hes the king of the strongest empire in the continent.

Also, before anyone even suggests it- no,i do not like the king. He's a pretty damn awful father, but the way he put her in her place was acceptable.

He can't be too mean, as it would signify he's resentful towards her for winning, which people with a personal vendetta against him would use to fuel all kinds of rumours and shituations, but he can't be too nice either, since it would be disgraceful for the leader of such an empire to listen to a little girl from God knows where.

If he had just sat there and let her talk to him like that, people would talk, and it wouldn't take long till others tried their hand at it as well.

    Now, to my next point:

I didn't think it needed to be said, but i guess not.

When someone says, for example, that they will buy you whatever you want for your birthday, it does not mean you can just go and ask for a car(assuming you guys arent too well off)

Yes, they said they'd give you whatever you wanted, but it's an unspoken rule to not ask for something that would be too difficult to access for them.

In this case, seeing the prince.

As to why it would be difficult-

The place he was banished to has a long standing history.
It would be almost sacrilegious to excuse him of it when no doubt other ancestors have gone through the same things as punishment.

People then would say two things that could prove detrimental:

    1) that's he's gone soft and cares too much for his son, so much so he's willing to forego century's of history.

That would bring about the queens ire, as he would never do that for her children.

Even though it was technically Jeannie's wish, it would not matter.

And 2) People would think he's trying to renew and change the country.

That may not sound so bad, but think: who are the key figures in politics among nobility. Especially in story's, where cliches are cliches for a reason.

The nobles from the previous generation. There's always that one character, too, who is against the protagonist who is usually an older man.

They tend to be traditional, and going against that is a no-no.

It is much more beneficial to put her in her place and make a semi-amicable relationship with one another, where the places they occupy are clear from the start - so that she doesn't get any ideas later on-

Again, this just from a "political" standpoint.
I'm not saying he's good, nor am I saying Jeanie's bad. I'm just saying his actions in this case and in this case only, are justified.

Also, did i just make a who-knows-how-long speech about why the actions of a character i dislike were acceptable while probably reading wayyyyyy too much into it just to get my point across?

    Yes, yes i did.

Ok, in hindsight, i realize i was unnecessarily patronizing in my response.

I apologise. I get anxious when I can't get my point across.

Do you really think that man views all of the kids in the empire as his son?

He's probably just another pawn to bring glory upon himself and his kingdom.

Though, if you mean literally like his son-like the one he abandoned and is punishing right at this moment-, then yes, i guess you aren't too far off the mark after all.

completely agree. she was so entitled, plus just because you get a wish, doesnt mean there aren't rules. what is she wished to be empress? to kill someone? the emperor gets to decide what constitutes a valid wish and he was going to give her a very worthy prize when she asked for something else. do i think hes being petty? yes. he could overturn his ruling but at the end of the day hes the fucking king and can do whatever the fuck he wants and she was basically telling him what he HAS to do. If I was king, I would have fucked her up
