Ok so you have said excellent things but in the future, if you don't mind, please include a TLDR for us stupid people (aka me, tbh I'm just lazy but you wrote good stuff so I made myself read it, but at the sametime I'm lazy lol)
I am proud of you, for being progressive and well read. Are you prehaps studying sociology or something of that nature? Or are you intrested in such topics? A lot of the words you used are the ones used in that subject.
as much as i love this story, the homophobia for gays (in this case referring to mlm and enbylm) made me quite uncomfortable: there was 2 instances where the first was early in the story—manseok thought that chase was gay, chase denied it, then manseok said something along the lines of then i don’t want you to meet my sister, even more so!—and the second one was when chase said come with me to france and then they both fake vomited. for the second one, though it was played as a joke, the thing is rooted in homophobia wherein coming across as too cheesy or sincere somehow alludes to you having feelings for the other person.
now on the victim blaming, so at first i thought that it was somewhat like that, that really the story was using the excuse of chase hurting other as justification for him being hurt since it is known that chase’s previous muse, gina, spread a lie that destroyed public perception of chase then continued to stalk. but really that was foolish and dismissive, the issue is complex.
the thing is that due to constant berrating and disapproval which could be seen as neglect to tend to the needs of the child’s well-being, chase stopped wanting to have a relationship that isn’t contractual. instead, he now values a person based on their worth/value to him, completely dismissing their personhood. a very unequal relationship. therefore the overtly belligerent attack by gina made him wake up, but he only opened his eyes for a fraction of a second then used it as an excuse to reinforce his world view at least that’s how i interpret it.
that is why it is so significant when chase, in a bid to protect manseok from the white capitalist asshole, decided to not associate with his muse since this act has no benefits to him—he is cut off from his main source of inspiration and work partner potentially forever if there was no intervention—thus we can see that he has transformed; realising his mistakes and not simply using people. rejection of the white asshole—representing capitalism, thus money and individualism and ridiculous notions meant to induce us into wage labour like “a need for competition is inherent in individuals”—is so important too. it rejects the capitalistic approach of treating relationships as transactional (which is somewhat mandated in capitalist society due to the need of HAVING A JOB SO WE DON’T STARVE TO DEATH :) ) instead, of love aka mutual respect, genuine interest to get closer, to bring happiness to whoever is in the relationship etc etc.
and you know why????
because chase actually!!! enjoys!!!! his fucking!!! job!!! he doesn’t want to get paid an exorbitant amount by trading his art/craft for something empty; a product, something tied to money only, looking to get capital while sacrificing his craftsmanship.
(ok i do get that he, as a member of the bourgeoisie having the opportunity to again, enjoy his fucking job is something that is restricted by money, and the luxury goods industry is extremely elitist and horrible in thinking that luxury = rare goods)
(but i’m extremely happy that this sentiment is conveyed in media that’s easy to read not like those white elitist academics (since those in the global south usually have text that are succinct and not overly dense) which have like 900 pages and 3 volumes)
