From what I read so far in the novel he’s not 2nd male lead or an old lover however they were expecting to marry each other. They were friendly to eachother but they didn’t share any longing glances or anything like that (at least in novel) . Berta and him don’t say anything about it but her sister says something like how she thought she would be able to marry the same man as Berta so they could always be together. Berta finds it awkward for obvious reasons but it didn’t seem like King paid much mind to it
