Anyways, half of the chapter was just confusing to me in general. I'm not sure if it's because of the translation or because the author had to rush the chapter but I had a pretty hard time understanding ch. 60. I'll go with the necklace explanation for now because it doesn't seem that important for the overall plot.
I think he was checking to see if Nuah reacted to it because after words he said they've assimilated.
