And Tristan may be pitiful I agree, but it realistic too how he stepped on Ivona to make himself feel better.
I would be more weird if he let himself being crushed on her when he craved attention & power since young (his father who is weaker than his uncle).
Unlike Ivona he became twisted & mad from jealousy, so seeing her looking up on him & being inferior (seeing people mocking her in front of him while complimenting him) sure make him feel better & make his ego grow..
