Yea but homophobia has nothing to do with believing groundless rumors.
And sure Korea is not as open to gay men. But i believe at the workplace, people would mainly talk behind the back the gay men. I doubt they'd openly harass them. Atleast not at the workplace.
I mean...i cant tell because idk how korea is but if your social image is as important as shown, then it's pretty dumb people can bully at work. That's not really a good image to have...
So you are saying that back then, people in Korea would just believe any rumors? Because as long as the person itself doesnt expose themself as gay. It's hard to prove they are gay. So people in Korea just blindly believed rumors?
Then as i said earlier, can't I just spread rumors that x man is gay. Will people believe me without seeing it for themselves? The truth is he is straight but i hate him so i spread false rumors. That sounds quite easy.
And harrasement was accepted at workplace?? They dont care that their employee are creating chaos environnement instead of working? I thought the competition for jobs was quite high so shouldn't they get rid of anyone who isnt being professional? I mean if the boss is homophobic, shouldn't he just fire any gay people right away ?
And idk like i get it that being homophobic was normal but doesn't it look bad to be harassing someone ? Or did koreans back then thought that 30 years old men harassing others is totally okay ? I am not saying people would try to stop the harassment, since homophobia is normal for them. But i believe most people would rather not do it themself because it's not something that would benefit their reputation / image.
Honestly I’ve never worked in korea but I see this type of pettiness in US offices and “professional” environments. not all, but it is not uncommon and it is very annoying.
Even though gays are becoming more accepted, there is still a lot of homophobia, general discomfort, or ridiculous gossip anyway (gay or not). I wouldn’t say this is a specific to korea issue. It’s moreso a people lack morality and will jump on any bandwagon issue just so that they aren’t the one being bullied.
Even being a bystander is still a big issue today because a lot of people think “better them than me.”
Again, not everywhere (or everyone) is like this, but a lot of yoai pettiness draws on real world pettiness.
Yep. In Korea your image is everything, even now. The smallest most baseless rumors people would believe right away rather than find the truth because they don’t want to be involved with the person in question (it’s easier for them to believe than get involved because they might get caught up in the rumor as well). Grown adults yes, I’d say that was probably one of the reasons why the suicide rate is so high in Korea.
Well there is a difference between being petty / gossiping and straight up harassing such as throwing coffee on purpose.
But the part that i dont understamd is that people are bullying based on rumors that they are groundless. And in.most yaois, it's not just one person. It's the whole.school/workplace that believe the rumors and starts bullying.
And i literally cant understamd how thats possible
I dont understand how it is possible that people would just believe on groundless rumors and act strongly about it.
You can easily ruin anyone's life with a lie. Anyone can be the victim.and anyone can be the culprit. You just gotta spread a false rumor.
That's the part that i literally cant begin to.understand.

Are they adults at the workplace or 3rd graders at school???
No idea who spread the rumor
No idea if its true or not
Oh but lets just harass ans bully that person
Yaois makes it look like i could just make a fake fb account and post "x guy is gay" with a photoshopped picture from gay sex on pornhub and replacing bottom's face with x guy. (Actually i wouldn't even need the picture since people believes anything anyway) Then he will get bullied at job, lose all his friends, disowned by family. Easy peazy.
I could probably make a living out of threatening some rich guy "gimme 1M$ or i make fake rumors you are gay!" through anonymous phone number
