he's not dead, I guess it's more appropriate to say that the ghost "tormented" him so much that emotionally he became so weak that he was able to be possessed, etc. Which I guess shook his soul quite a lot, so the connection of his soul and his human body is very weak, which is why it's explained in the early chapters that any major scare could make his soul fly out of his body. I guess think of it like strings holding the body and soul together, but his are very weak and kinda broken. But he's still hanging on to life by a thread. idk if that made any sense but I hope it did. Just keep reading, it makes sense eventually

I believe that was just apart of the ghost tournamenting him so he would be easier to possess
