    It would be nothing in Poland, we pay a small amount every month, but when sth really bad happens to our health, we don't have to bother about money then. Apart from all the surgeries, for which we have to pay anyway.

    It's likely his deductible, since he has an insurance card. In the US , my hospital deductible for an ER visit is about 100. (He didn't have an overnight stay, looks like. It was a visit to the hospital cuz he passed out. They likely gave him an IV for rehydration and calories.)

    Yes. My parents have Blue Cross Blue Shield the deductible is is about $1,200 and then the insurance kicks in.

    Japan has government healthcare. Everyone pays into it depending upon their income. Then they pay something like 30% of charges. Not a copay.

    Nope, it's probably the flat cost (they may refund later after bringing the insurance card). A not-overnight hospital stay is like 30-50$ for normal student insurance iirc. American medical costs are f$$$ed up.
