I dont think of it as a romance. The way I'm reading it and mc is that he is using her ad a pawn and a cover I don't think he got any feelings for her at all. I could be wrong of course, but it just don't read like romance to me at all rather like manipulation.
I hope thats the case cos I honestly doubt this author writes a romance this bad. The whole manipulation feels way more on theme. I think you are right
