Oh gosh I thought something completely different ! I assumed he saw the car and thought back to the night he was in rut , and forced himself on him , causing the pregnancy and and the tragedies following it. I thought the last thing he wanted to do was to bring him back into one of the places that caused him pain, so he choose to walk to avoid any bad memories and to make sure he 100% safe on his way back home.

Oh but I think your viewpoint was very valid . I tend to dig deep into a character's thought process when there is no speech or thought bubbles and make up my own opinion on what the characters are thinking.
