Rather than all of this stemming from one misunderstanding, I do think that the Emperor’s new character was a summation of his lowkey rejection, the idea that Heun might’ve been wanting to kill him and finally that Heun might’ve been in a relationship already and with his brother, no less. It’s pretty impossible to assume that he went crazy from one incident, more like this one incident was his best excuse to finally show himself. Not to mention, some of his personality from the past can still be seen in his present self.
