"Gorgeous gems and jewellery are nothing more than a practical burden."
Then why is there a gem in your cravat, huh?ʕಠ_ಠʔ

You want to know why jewelry is a traditional gift for woman?
Back in the day when we said that women had NO RIGHTS. It is 100% true. You were the property of ur father then ur husband. There were so many things you were denied and one of them is banking without a man. So for what ever reason you needed money( ur man was so bad with money or he is abusive, which by law he had right to an certain extent , and you needed to run away) Women would need to liquid their possessions. Oh and all of the furniture and plates and what not is part of the house ak the man's stuff. What did women have? Their clothes and jewelry. Guess which would help the women more???

Agreed. In my culture, I'm a palestiniam bedouin (bedouins are nomadic folks of the middle east), but it appeals to all of middle eastern culture, Gold is very important to us bc we could always use it as trust fund in case we needed money. Us liking jewelry doesn't make us therefore bad, it's our trust fund if we ever need them. People who think like her sister are shallow, especially because she does not realize her privilege.

I know it's probably not that big of a deal, but did they actually got in a conflict because the duke is trying to give her jewellery? 0_0
Did she have to get mad and become awkward at him just because she recieved something she didn't want? If she wants a smile instead of gifts, just tell him, no need to get so upset over it. Especially since she knew about his past and why he can't express his emotion that easily. Idk, rejecting his gift just because it's expensive seems a bit pretentious to me.

Idk, I interpreted another way...
She was happy that they were getting close and reciving the expensive gift was like when you get payed for something, cuz originally they get married for money and status, so she felt hurt, even if it was silly...
She then returns the gift and says that she would prefer other way to show gratitude, like a smile, but the Duke shows an uncomfortable expression, so the Duchess doenst get mad, but hurt...
They don't know how to interact cuz they like each other but they still think the other is on this relationship cuz they signed a contract. Then the Duke or the Duchess try to act according to the contract as if they dont rlly have deep feelings, they hurt each other even more
So...all they need to do is talk properly (╯°Д °)╯╧╧
This story is really sad, but I just can't help but think that she should've resent Kaid more. Even though logically she knows that what he did was right, it's only realistic that she also hate the person that betrays her feelings, killing her parents and burn them in front of her even if the hatred is also mixed with love. It just kind of annoys me that all she felt is self-blame when she has every right to be angry or even hate him.
Not only that, it's pretty scummy of Kaid to not only get close to her, but even date and kiss her even though he knew that in the end he has to kill her family and there's a large possibility that he has to execute her too. Even though he supposedly loves her, he doesn't trust her at all, proven by he never gives her hint on the bad things her parents has done and he never warns her the day before he was going to take action on her family. His past actions are so heartless and ruthless that no matter how well he treated her it just comes off as hypocritical to me :(
exactly my thoughts! I hoped that she would detest him way more instead of blaming only herself.
This exactly the comment I was looking for, I felt a lot of annoyance reading this story, this guy is so fake and hypocrite.
