The progress feels unrealge. I'm so giddy watching these two but I bet ilay would be in a whole lotta shock if he could see himself making those expressions.

It isn't unreal you simply have either forgotten the story or not picked up on context cues.
Who told you Ilay was born with anger issues? He also had no problem with people saying his name as a child, in fact he even tried to get Taeui to say it right.
So with a slight bit of literacy you can tell Ilay started killing folks for saying his name after Taeui hung up without ever repeating it. He also probably developed anger issues because Taeui never called back or anything.
It's full circle.
This author actually has good story building and doesn't drop details for no reason at all. So please don't let their work be useless and try to understand them.
If you still haven't understood my explanation: it's not one of those where they met around the time of the story.
It's one of those stories where the story actually starts decades before the current time of the story.
And when evaluating whether or not it is believable, you should actually start by putting yourself in the story. In the story, their timeline lasted 20 years, including months, probably a year or 2 of military + hide and seek.
I don't know how much realer it could get given that "realism" isn't even the point of the story in the first place.
I meant how the progress made me feel— not that I couldn't make sense of it. It's been a while since it's been released, and they've come a long way now, so the disparity between the past and present "feels" unreal to me.
