im guessing the original is probably in korean and the author uses 'hyung' which younger males use on older males, so although it does mean brother, it also means 'older male friend'

Exactly, for us it's similar to when a daughter says that she wants to marry her dad or a son wants to marry his mom. Bcs that's what the parents are, they are married. It's not like the children rlly understand the concept of marriage anyway.

And maybe vericke doesn't see Cain as a dad bcs he saw his own dad for very little time. his real dad didn't rlly have a chance to be a dad to him except to teach him how to survive. So maybe vericke doesn't know what Cain does is actually parenting?

For you it maybe uncommon but for adults who works with children/youth a lot it's a common occurrence for them, it's just usually said youth/children get rejected by the adult and generally like to keep their love hidden

Also again I must rephrase it's the adult responsibility to reject them and not accept their feelings as they should know children/youth are not fully well developed
