I really don't understand how people can think gene going back to his family was a better ending. Yes his mother told him he could come back but do you really understand what would it mean? like, you don't get it, its not like he could've come back and then leave again when he wanted to, so he could follow his dreams, if he came back he would've had to stay there forever again and that absolutely would've made him miserable. He took the decision to leave the person he loved the most in the world in order to follow his dreams, thats how much he wanted to achieve his goals in life, so how can you think he would've been happier if he went back? You don't understand his character at all.
And also, I know its hard to understand and you think "why did they just stop talking to each other all those years?" because I do too, but what you have to understand is that Trevor thought of himself as something that was keeping Gene away from being the most and best he could, and I suppose he thought him contacting Gene would be "egoist" because Gene would've came back to him again and stop following his dreams. and In Gene's pov I guess he thought the same, that Trevor was going to be okay without him because as you can see, they just assumed that the other would find someone else to keep them company (as in a lover,friend or family)
This is not as weird or stupid as u think, and its something that happens in real life a lot too, much more that you may think. There's many old people who have lots of stories about how they just had to let people go, some of them never saw each other again, its common dude I don't understand why you all act as if it's not. And it can happen to people for countless reasons, In this case, I think both of them just thought it was the best to let go and keep going with their own life. And also, Its one of those type of situations where both of them thought "If he wanted me back he would reach for me" but since none of them did, they thought it was over. miscommunications this big are SO common you have no idea.
And lastly, I really do think you all are forgetting that this is a queer love story, Its not directly shown in the manga but I think it was so obvious too that Trevor just accepted he was going to be "alone" in life, but deep inside maybe he wanted Gene to have a chance to meet more people, maybe specifically a woman, who could've gave Gene a "true" family. Maybe you all just need to read way more angst to understand this manga. even after all these years, they ended up together dude, that's the WHOLE POINT.
