It's the 21st century maybe real life Japan is not ready yet to support real life famous same gender couples but i wish it would happen more often in manga literature can change the present. Make lgbtq+ okay and accepted in books, manga, shows... And the rest will follow
It’s kinda hard to enforce that because it’ll hide the harsh realities of being gay/queer in a homophobic society. It’s almost like pretending the discrimination doesn’t exist. Also, art tends to reflect reality, so a lot of BL manga just reflects the current society of Japan and there’s not much you can do about it unless you’re a Japanese citizen and you start advocating for gay rights publicly. That’s just had reality works
Yes i thought about it too after writing my comment and i agree with you. I guess i just wish for a better world in general and sometimes i wish for it so hard that i feel exhausted when i watch/read smth and it's homophobic, transphobic, racist etc. I do still think literature and tv can help change the world for the better though. Normalize what's being demonized.

Tbf Japan doesn't really support famous people dating in general. Japan has a big issue with ruining performer's careers, especially female ones, because they're found out to be dating and apparently that ruins the fantasy for their fans who just lose interest. Obviously homophobia is a dimension of this too but I'm just saying that Japanese culture has an issue with celebrity dating in general.

East Asia in general has a problem with celebrity dating. Don’t even get me started on k-pop idols dating. It’s a complete chaotic mess and it’s absolutely annoying as fuck. Just let them be. They’re people just like us. There’s a reason Asian celebrities keep their dating lives as private as possible until they get married or have a baby you know?

While it's shitty, people can't help crushing on celebrities, and some also can't help losing interest when they know they're taken. That's going to impact their sales. It sucks but i can see why the culture has developed that way. If anything, it surprises me more they we don't have this issue in the West very much.
