He kind of does suffers but seems they'll end up together in the end. When he starts suffering its just for abit, and before all this happens, both MC and ML start falling for each other which pisses that concubine that the ML likes (sorry forgot her name), so in the night where the MC is sharing with ML he gets call by that two-face's concubine messenger saying how it was an emergency acting like the bitch was really sick to the point of dying but the MC ask the ML not to leave her alone because she has a bad feeling, but the ML leaves her anyways and the MC gets kidnapped and killed (or her soul leaves the empress's body and she goes back to her own world).
Only after the MC 'dies' is when the ML realises how bad he messed up to the point where he goes crazy and leaves the MC's palace as it was. Then after days/month passes, she is send back again, but this time she's send in a man's body and so the story becomes like a BL story because the ML somehow becomes attractive to the MC (when she's a man) because she reminds him of the empress. But this time the MC focuses more in solving the problem of who killed her when she was the empress while messing with the ML. And after time passes and she finds out everything, she gets arrested by the ML who suspect her so when he was getting ready to going to interrogate her, and she wants to tell him everything (or was about to) she gets assassinated. This drives the ML to go crazy for losing his 2nd lover twice.
I forgot what was I told that happens after that but the person who told me this said she read the novel along ago and this is all she could remember because she ended up dropping this after the MC chose to go back for a 3rd time. (apparently a voice came to her telling her whether she wanted to finish the mystery behind her being send back in time or if she wanted to move on and just live in her time-period, so she chose to go back for a 3rd time because she wanted to solve the mystery and also because she was still in love with the ML so the person who gave me this spoiler drop it).
I'm still going to read this story though, because apparently within his craziness and depression days, the emperor still loved the MC and started losing his favoritism and likeness for that two-face concubine.
