i think she was strongly impacted by her terminal illness. and yes shame too, stigma around aids is severe and literally deadly. so the combo of the mental damage from her abusive partner + terminal diagnosis + complete lack of community support put her in a spot where her child’s words resonated and she thought she might actually be doing him a favor.
I get it. But nope. As a child whose mother’s left cause of “doing a favor”. People who abandon their children no matter the reason ain’t doing nobody but themselves a favor.
