I can't remember very well, but I think that at some point people from where Eclis was from were trying to escape (???) or something, and Eclis proposed Penelope to run away with them. In the end, Eclis revealed his people's plans and they were killed. I don't remember why he did it, though.

I really hate these kinds of trying hard plots in stories with politics involved. Like everytime a good guy make a (tiny) mistake, people with higher rank (enemies) can make the crowd loathe the good guy easily, they’d even be shouting, throwing harsh words, throwing things towards him. WHILE if a bad guy would be caught doing grave mistake, he would only come out with a little punishment. Then that’s all.
