I really adored this manga; however, I wish they went more in depth about the new development in the powers. Like, dissolving into the water or wind is a big freakin' deal!!
I agree, and its only after so many time reading that I caught this one part though.
When he dissolved to find his mom, he mentioned being a part of everything. So I think he actually manages to do that, he becomes so connected (the manga really stresses how we are all connected a lot) to everything that he looses form until someone he loves finds him and calls him back to them.
SO in a way, to me at least, it seems less about the elements and more about how hes so connected and love keeps him grounded ^////^

The Japanese way of saying/writing :"He can't speak" and "he doesn't have tongue" is very smiliar. Could have been aswell a small misunderstanding on the translator's side.
