I think it will be bad for both of them, albeit in different ways.
Luke doesn't think his friends will betray him. He doesn't think you can judge a person based off of "one or two mistakes". When Bruno does hand over those photos, the shock of his betrayal will understandably devastate Luke.
Luke has also never been publicly "outed", nor does he know the sting of public ostracization. Sure, some of his close friends won't care, but the same can't be said for the rest of the campus.
Since Luke's never been subject to mass contempt and derision, it might mess with his head space enough, that he might find it too difficult to perform on stage. He might envision, and maybe correctly so, an audience that only jeers and heckles him.
Luke is also only a sophomore, I believe? While Andrew is in his final year, with only months to go.
Andrew will no doubt suffer just as much, whether from having to relive a similar trauma from his past, at having his private life publicly exposed, or from having to witness Luke crumple from the same fate.
Andrew does have a higher public profile, as previously mentioned, because of his father holding a government office and being on a television series when he was young.
Luckily, he's turned away from the spotlight and turned to a STEM field where sexual orientation doesn't affect one's career prospects as much. While Luke, on the other hand, is trying to be an actor, a profession inundated by public opinion.
I can see Luke standing firm admist the storm of criticism, and I can also see Andrew becoming strong for Luke.
In the end, I view Derrick's schemes in the lense of, "killing two birds with one stone" instead of one being the true target, with the other serving as collateral. Derrick hates them both.
