I've been wondering this since Sweet Heart Trigger... is this author American? I don't know how to explain it, but her characters feel very American to me. And then there are also references like the "kissing booth", which is obviously not something any ordinary Japanese writer would even think to mention.
Pretty sure the author is Japanese but just really likes American settings. Sort of like how some people in America really like Japan and set their stories there. I mean, they’re originally written in Japanese so I would assume the author is Japanese as well.
I was thinking maybe an American living overseas in Japan or a Japanese who came over here for school. But your idea sounds pretty plausible too. Her characters are just so naturally American that it's kind of crazy to think that the author isn't American or lived in America at all.

Ah Gaku-san, that's a pretty heavy load to place on one person's shoulders. Imagine the trauma that would've caused Akito if he wasn't such a sweetheart. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.
