To be fair on the prince's part, his mom died, his dad clearly doesn't care about him, he become noticeable more distant from his half-brother and by extension his step mother after his uncle started protecting him thereby stopping him from knowing what she's like.
It'd make sense to believe the only one that outwardly stays by your side and protected you even while the negative reputation of staying near the prince disliked by his own father, is obvious. And it's his mother's brother who was there for the prince at his lowest moment.
