In the first place he became stronger way too fast after having his enlightenment in the painting. I understand that was what the painting was meant for but his own brother that spent years training before him is noticeably weaker thna him??
In the first place he was incredibly more powerful than his brother. He might have lost in terms of battle power at first, but his perception is quite incredible, so he was able to get an enlightenment. I also think that not only the painting save his life, but little by little he was able to gather enough mana even though he was originally physically weak.
