I’m not sure if this is right but from what I understand is he died in the beginning by drowning from saving a child. He was given a 2nd chance to fix things with pado and when he gets upset (not sure if this is accurate) he starts to turn to water which he has to eat the star candy to return to normal.

Yea I guess he did die and I think if works things out with pado I predict the mc will disappear but wish to stay alive with pado and will be granted that wish or he will disappear and pado then realizes his feelings which leads to bringing back the mc. But that’s just what I think ╮(￣▽￣)╭
