This might seem I'm butting in to the topic..

According to what I have heard, the 'cutting of man's penis' have started long before the 15th century (or so it seem from the timeline of the story).
It was once done to kill the lustfull desires on man (either by cutting the penis or the balls or even all of them..), it is to be said that the desire to have sex comes from the hormones produced by the testicels.
The Chinese had done them for centuries, especially for the queen's guards. This is to prevent affairs happening between them.

In this case, I think they cut Dante's (or other victims) because: 1] He is accused to be a traitor. 2] He is undeniable to have no control of his lower half (it seems to both man & women..). 3] The English, Germans, & the Russians (and other countries) usually do this to torture their prisoner of war. This is to make them surrender& obey, as a part of torturing to kill them (it is pretty effective method). 4] (This one is preety common), to make prostitutes out of "unproductive men" (in means of the reproductive organ, but still have the ass). I'm Japanese and I went to junior high and high school in Japan. I think giving the second button doesn't necessarily mean a confession in the boy's part.
I think boys try to leave the second button for a special someone, or for girls they prefer most, but giving a second button is more like a keepsake and memorial to give to a girl to comfort her, since the boy's graduating and their ways are going to part. I think that's why the girl in the story was angry. She thought he should have at least given her mercy, and handed her the button to console her.
And the custom is to rip off the button in front of the girl so you can't really fool her about the number of button. Back in junior high, popular boys who were graduating had none of his button left, because girls were all over him and they were asking for what was left of his buttons.

Yeah, every were there's different traditions. A personal picture with the cute someone that I used to like, is the best way for me to remember them...
