I think its because he bombed the written exam. MC only answered the last and hardest question because he found the easy/modern ones difficult as he hasn't learned them yet.
But I'm pretty sure they mentioned that that question was rated more in magic test (like a bonus question) ... so if he answered that hardest question correctly then it should have been a pass. For Summoner's test he got a phoenix which the instructor knew so that should be a pass, for Swordsmanship he had a duel with the instructor as well.. So that's why the 3 professors were fighting to get him to pick their class. Unless I interpreted the TL wrong or I'm mixing my plots around since I read too many of these types of webtoons these days I don't really wanna re read but I don't think it makes sense that he's in the failing class... he should be at least in Class 3 or 4 if he really did bombed his exams
