the only reason i’m giving this 3 stars is that it seemingly had no direction. there wasn’t any major overlying conflict or anything like that, so it was hard to tell what exactly the point was. the entire story is just: jiang shen likes dancing, and he also likes bai jinyi. this is okay for what it is, but i felt like it didn’t have much substance, since it was mostly just a series of things happening and jiang shen overcoming them without any trouble because he Has A Dream. i believe there is a way to write about regular people simply living their lives without it seeming boring due to lack of… plot. also, the artist didn’t figure out how pointe shoes work until the AU side story at the very end…! how can you know that pointe shoes are ruined when they get wet, but not that the entire point of wearing them is to stand on your toes..??… or that professional dancers need to replace them very often, so if bai jinyi wants to give jiang shen his gift, he can just wait a few weeks and he will need new shoes again …???!!?? (and in fact, it’s implied that jiang shen dances for over eight hours a day—A LONG FUCKING TIME—so he would likely need to replace his shoes multiple times a week.)
