The fact that the comments are saying that the Griffin stays at the lake to look at himself reminds me of the story of Narcissus. Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. According to Tzetzes, he rejected all romantic advances, even rejecting them in the most cruelest ways thus, all of them commiting suicide. Because of this, Nemesis, the goddess of retribution and revenge, learned what had happened and decided to punish Narcissus for his behaviour. He led Narcissus in a pool of water and there he saw his own reflection, and fell in love with himself. He later died, and in his place sprouted a flower bearing his name.
Honestly Greek Mythology is confusing as fuck and they are multiple versions of this, some state that he drowned himself, after realising that he couldnt be together with his own reflection, and some stated that he loved himself so muuuuuch that his eyes couldnt even stray for even a second and he starved to death.
