It does translate to that but shounen ai has ephebophilic origins bc of uneraged boys and grown men. So during the 2000's they wanted to swerve away from that and used the term BL instead. Nowadays mlm (male l male) manga are tagged as BL, and if it has sex scenes they're explicit BL.
