If I remember correctly, the protago married the crown prince because of danger. Her mother was related to the royalty (don't remember how) and was murdered. To protect her from her own family, the King married her to his son. That's why in that family, she is the one who holds the highest power.

It's not like the crown prince said he wanted to marry her up to where I read in the novel.
The mother was the king's half sister. She wasn't murdered but died after giving birth. Her husband didn't show up until after she was dead since he was busy partying with his mistress and their sons which is why the king is furious.
