I have no spoiler, I just know that the dog will die. Everything is pointing in that direction. The woman that is his mom/owner will probably stay as a permanent employee in the kitchen, maybe in the future she will take in another pet.
Take it with a grain of salt, it's just my speculation from my experience as a reader. It might be wrong, the dog might live a bit longer and we will all be singing and dancing cumbayah or something, but my guts feeling tells me otherwise.
