He lied that she had died so she could reunite with Smith
The man was the arranged marriage for Talas that her mother in laws new husband arranged for her.
Talas and him got married but she was sad and still in love with Mr. smith so he agreed to go with her to find him.
He (the husband) then told the mother in law Talas died during their travels so he could get his dowry back and remarry again.

The anime is too perfect. The studio really outdone itself. Like I'm watching a high end anime haha. I'm liking the story so far though I'm not a fan of harem with a nonchalant like ML. But I like his humble self when he's alone. I like the rich classmate so far.
