Honestly in that picture she were just tanned, usually when a girl is tanned in manga are rapresented like this. This author always show different type of beauty while using her oc, but if you think that was makeup dunno, or if the tanned curly hair means blackface...
Btw the point of the author Is showing all type of beauty, especially the discriminated one, as far as i know being tanned in Japan is a "bad things" or something that don't make you beautiful, so I think it's more correlated to this than to black people.

i of course know that it wasnt done with bad intentions and that the author is probably uneducated when it comes to black people, but that definitely wasn't supposed to represent a tan. the afro and the outfit are both reminiscent of late 1900s black women. additionally, there are already fashion movements in japan that involve tanning in order to fight against colorist beauty standards (gyaru)

Honestly there’s no way to confirm it seeing as it’s in black and white and the max colors shown are black white and grey. Only if it was in color would you know. You can see chapter 38’s cover and has the same shading for the skin tone. So it could be the shading for tan skin. There’s also a dude in the manga who is pale and has an Afro.

yeah theres no way to confirm it, but its really obvious that hows shes pressed is supposed to portray a black woman. there's no reason why they would darken her skin color, put her in an afro, and put her in something that a black woman would wear in the 1900s, and say that its all just a coincidence and it doesn't mean anything. the reason 38 is tanned is because shes at the beach, but there's nothing in the cover of chapter 8 that even hints to her being outside

lol u think tanned and curly hair is blackface? no black face is someone of a non black race most cases, white people, taking actual black paint and paint their face, and or body black, and lips with red paint, and acting crazy like mock caveman noises, sprouting gibberish, or even just acting plain crazy.

now, they simply could'v just done a black beauty take on her but it simply looks more like japanese kurogal era to me. The author drew the cover, just to signify another beauty style, its a style of art covers dont through many other mangas of slice of life, seinen, genre.

yes, racist caricature black face exaggerated features and made black people seem like a joke, but blackface, by definition, is "used to refer to the practice of wearing makeup to imitate the appearance of a Black person". she DIDNT have that hair texture or that skin color, and there's absolutely nothing insinuating that she got it from a tan, like in 38, where you can easily use context clues to know that she got her tan from the sun, but in the chapter 8 cover, its really obvious that her skin is darker to imitate a black woman. if you say that she looks like shes dressing in kurogal, fashion, you obviously know nothing about gyaru???? darkening your skin doesn't make you gyaru, DRESSING gyaru makes you gyaru, and tanning is just a part of it. in no way is she dressing in gyaru in the chapter 8 cover photo. she literally has an entire afro

her having an afro is isnt black face, again blackface, is painting black face making caveman noise, tribal noices, and or acting like a "barbarian" jumping up and down, its a stylized cover that isnt offense, sure i may be wrong about kuro gal, im not gonna claim to be a expert on gyaru. regardless, looking or stylized similar to black features vs american 'black face' taboo are not the same thing

again, thats not the definition of blackface. you can literally search it up on oxford languages. the term blackface, and i quote, is "used to refer to the practice of wearing makeup to imitate the appearance of a Black person". yes its especially used to mock black people, but this is, by definition, black face, because shes using makeup and changing her appearance to imitate a black person.

but again, it would only count if they intend to do it as bad purposes, it's like, saying if a japanese person tried korean make up, and dresses up like a kpop idol with a wig, they identify as korean, or are doing something bad (some are but not in the most cases). Honestly, this seems more close to the okinawa cover authors draw, with tan skin and light features, you can claim, the curls are afro hair, but at the same time, you cant say its just tanned skin and curly hair, ive seen many people of indian communities irl, have that kind of curls as well.

so "black face" not just oxford dictionary, but according my african history class, it needs to be done with ill inteded purposes, not merely, dress up. also, curly hair and tanned skin, wont easily equal to black, especially, if its in a black and white gray scale screen tone

you cant just ignore context clues and say that she could be imitating anything other than a black person, when its obvious that that isnt what the author is intending for it to look like a Japanese person also could have an afro and dark skin, but she those are traits most commonly associated with black people, so if you look between the lines and use your context clues, its really obvious that shes not trying to portray a Japanese person with dark skin and a fro or an indian person (i don't know why you even brought that up) but a black person

Korean makeup and "kpop clothing" arent enthic features, that is completely different from CHANGING YOUR SKIN COLOR AND HAIR TEXTURE to imitate another RACE, so i really don't get your point??? and again, oxford languages is one of the, if not the most, revered and looked to source for modern day english terms and words, so I'm pretty sure that holds more reputation and reliability than your African history class

    XieLianForever6969 September 5, 2024 7:41 am

you cant really just say that "it only counts if this and that because my class says so" because your class isnt as credible as oxford language, which one, has a reputation as the most authoritative source on the English language, and two, is widely accepted as the most complete record of the English language ever assembled, and I'm not just saying that, I'm quoting it. for all anyone could know, your education system and what they're teaching you could be ANYTHING, so id rather rely on oxford than your class when it tells me what the definition of blackface is

its not even source of reliability, to me it seems more like ur the one ignoring the context clues, on what the oxford "definition" is ur hooked up on what the definition of what black face is, which describes it on the very surface. regardles off how distingusied and renown a college may be, its ur readibility, and ability to not just treat a definition, as just words. What you are saying to me says, hey the skin tone is black and white, hair is white, but lets call that black, and use the definition that is based off black ethnicity / race . which dont make much sense.

even if u say the author drew yume in a black style for fuck's sake , black face is being racist, dressing up like a black person, and making unintelligent comments remarks, actions and belittling the race. so i'll ask you how the fuck according to ur oxford definition is the author belittling them? im not talking dark skin and afro, get past that already. cuz this entire convo u seemed to miss that. Please dont reply if ur just gonna argue cuz she seemed to look black with afro, thats not the whole piece

oh my god im not missing anything, what I'm saying is that YOURE the one stuck on one definition. I'm telling you that black face IS NOT specifically jumping around making noises and acting like a caveman, because ITS A MUCH BROADER DEFINITION AND THIS FITS THE DEFINITION. yes, Its not even just a college, its literally THE MOST REKNOWNED SOURCE that english experts rely on and go to, which obviously makes it the majority, and what you're basically saying is that you should just make up your own definition and interpretation and ignore what professors and experts say. that's literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I'm convinced you have no idea what the hell a context clue is. how are you saying that IM missing the context clues, when the context clues that you're saying I'm "missing" is just "well she mighttt not be portraying a black person" when she clearly is??? your entire argument is just saying "well noooo you cant just assume shes black because they darked her skin color and gave her an afro! it doesn't mean anything!" THATS LITERALLY WHAT A CONTEXT CLUE IS DUMBASS YOU COULD LITERALLY SAY THE SAME THING WITH A
RACIST CARCATURE, "well he MIGHT not have painted his face black to portray a black person and he might NOT have drawn big red lips, a giant nose, and a big afro to portray a black person" YOU ARENT MAKING ANY SENSE YOU KEEP SAYING oh that's not it that's not all it is, BUT THATS CONTRADICTING YOUR POINT THAT ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A BLACK PERSON??? the intention of the picture is to show that BLACK WOMAN fashion is beautiful just like all the other fashions portrayed on the other cover pages, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT BUT BY DEFINITION IT IS STILL BLACKFACE and i have absolutely no clue why you're denying this

here oxford learner's dictionary " [uncountable] dark make-up used in the past by white actors to make their skin look dark. Using blackface is now considered highly offensive.
" i dont think the definition here fits, shes not white and author didnt do it with offensive purposes, what differs form black style and black face is whether its offensive or not so u cant just claim its black face, its not just they wore black make up portrayed as black, and this actually comes from american, as well as african american history. with many documentaries, not just oxford to back it up. and as obvious as it yumeko aint white also its supposed to portray the beauty of the features not makeup itself

there's a black person's face and "blackface" honestly, its more disrespecting of you calling it black face, and denounces the portrayal of beauty the author is trying to portray.

also i read ur og comment and if u understand author's tryna portray different beauty standards whats got u so confused with the outfits!!? lowkey i think its also a style of covers they do for manga with mainly seinen / shoujo / josei manga that tie into slice of life genres. havent seen it done too often in manhuas, webtoons, and manhwas.

here oxford learner's dictionary " [uncountable] dark make-up used in the past by white actors to make their skin look dark. Using blackface is now considered highly offensive." i dont think the definition here... crimsoncrow

i dont think the fact that shes not white matters, because she had light skin and she isnt black, nor does she have black features. the reason why they specifically said white actors is because, as you said, blackface came from America, so there isnt really any Japanese people doing blackface (also because there wasn't really any black people in japan at that time). that doesn't mean that if a Japanese person does blackface without knowing the connotations of it, that it doesn't count, because it still does. that also doesn't denote the definition, because you cant say "because shes japanese, and not American, the actual definition, which is that blackface doesn't specifically need to be mocking to be blackface, isnt valid" because those the first doesn't disprove the second.

i genuinely don't understand why you think its disrespectful to call it blackface (which is what it is), since this isnt good representation. putting black features on your not-black character isnt good representation for a black person. that's literally just putting black features onto a Japanese person. it does nothing. its not the revolutionary art piece that you're portraying it to be
