side consort were the most important consort in a hosehold (but that does'nt apply in the emperor harem), just below the wife, and with a lot of power. they could be given management of the house if the husband was disatisfied with the wife, and had power over other concubine (exept the wife). it's basically the highest concubine. since jun shao wanted to please the vice minister of war (song lixin father), but could'nt marry a wife without the emperor decree (since he's a prince), it's normal he gave song lixin the highest position possible.
