Can someone who’s not biased explain ch 178 interaction with Derrick and Pen. Like the fact where she says she understands why he was gifting her and doing all this stuff suddenly to her.

I'm not sure what you're confused about but he was doing everything for himself. He wanted to control her because he couldn't control his feelings for her. He kept on justifying he was treating her as his sister but still had romantic feelings for Penelope.
He was gifting her items to hopefully see whatever little affection she used to show be given. Remember in earlier chapters their relationship wasn't too bad. But his obsession and self-hatred due to his affections for her was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It practically scared her off coz she could never do anything right in Derrick's eyes. He loved her but hated her too for making him feel certain ways.
He really is irredeemable just for the simple fact he wanted to control and cage her but hated and loved her. His conflicting feelings made it so easy for the fake daughter to brainwash him.
Did that make sense?

Wait if anyone is like “nah not feeling it” while looking at the title or cover or first few chapters just keep reading. I was going to do the same and today I was like I’ll just read for a little bit since I’d probably drop it anyways cause I didn’t feel like reading anything today. But now I’m all caught up and it was actually a really good read and kind of addicting.
One of the things I really like are how the woman are written, despite the time period being one that isn’t a great time for woman especially, the story doesn’t unnecessarily talk about women being so pathetic and completely helpless. It’s more like a mention for them being “lower than men” while the women still shine doing what they are able to in the limits of what they’ve learned if that makes sense. I love woman empowerment but I hate when it’s forced onto people whose role purpose suddenly vanishes because of it. This story does a great job at keeping the MC the center of a female empowerment role while continuing to write amazing side female characters. And the “sisterhood” trope in this comic is also not forced. I just love how this story is written.

Ngl a lot of this is super cliche like not the story just certain situations in it. People gathering under the mc, mc being super lazy (from the beginning) and scumy after getting stronger idk a lot of it you can tell is inspired by other stories. The bad people getting better is also very rushed like especially with the blue haired guy why’d he turn into a submissive parrot that kept apologizing at some point… like it’s a good story but it feels very rushed at times
