He's in love and obsessed with the idea of her, he's obsessed with the idea of someone who would always love and care for him since he was deprived of that as a kid.
It's like how some people are obsessed with being in a relationship. They don't actually love the person, they love the idea of the person and what they represent. Hence why he really wouldn't notice much of a difference or be able to tell it's not really her.
At least that's my take away from this.
