It's also like that in real life too. There were times, especially the guys, who made fun of each other about not having a gf, never holding hands with a girl, not having their first kiss yet, etc. I also had plenty of girl acquaintances who also teased about others not having done their firsts as well. They were also young.

Where I’m from it was more to show camaraderie and kinda makes what you’d see as a flaw not matter as much. But yeah on first meetings ppl did tend to talk without thinking a lot. It seems rude thinking back on it but back then “unrestrained” just seemed to be part of how we were raised
